Blake Treinen was given the save opportunity, but he loaded the bases with two outs, so Dave Roberts brought in Casparius to face Yandy Diaz as the winning run. Casparius fell behind 2-1 but got Diaz to ground out to shortstop to end the game. This is now Casparius’ second save of the season, and he is firmly part of a closer committee with Treinen and Alex Vesia while Tanner Scott (forearm) is on the IL.

Lopez gave up five hits, walked one and struck out five. He turned the game over to the bullpen in the eighth inning with a 6-2 lead. The Athletics’ bullpen proceeded to allow eight runs to Rays in the eighth inning, costing Lopez the win. That’s a tough break for Lopez as well as fantasy managers. Lopez is lined up to face the Rangers at home on Sunday.

Peralta gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five. It was a solid rebound start after he allowed seven runs to the Rockies at Coors Field in his Rays debut. The Rays haven’t totally fixed Peralta quite yet, but this was certainly a step in the right direction. Peralta is lined up to face the Orioles at home on Sunday.

Carroll hit a 103.5 mph line drive that found second baseman Willi Castro’s glove in the first inning. With two outs, the Diamondbacks were able to rally and Nolan Arenado’s grand slam put them up 4-0. In the second inning, Carroll was in the middle of the rally with an RBI double and two batters later it was 7-0. It was his 24th double of the year. He’s hitting .241 with an .802 OPS and 55 RBI this season.

Arenado’s home run was his 18th of the year. He hit a grand slam off Gabriel Hughes in the first inning. Arenado has found his power stroke with four home runs in nine games in August so far. He’s hitting .242 with a .755 OPS and 58 RBI this year.

Merrill’s homer off Logan Henderson was crushed 431 feet to center, giving the Padres the lead in the seventh. He also hit a ball 383 feet in his previous at-bat. Merrill has homered in three straight games and has nine homers in 22 games since July 19.

Mize was effective, but not in an especially encouraging way. He generated just six whiffs, though he did get 21 called strikes for a 33 percent CSW. His velocity, which was well down in his final start for the Tigers before returning to normal on 10 days’ rest last week in his otherwise miserable Padres debut (8 ER in 3 1/3 IP versus Arizona), was back down a little tonight; his fastball was 0.7 mph lower than his season average and his slider was down 1.4 mph. He doesn’t seem like quite as good of a bet now as he did earlier in the season in Detroit, but in a nice situation in San Diego, he’s probably worth sticking with in mixed leagues. He’ll pitch in Cleveland on Sunday.

Miller walked William Contreras with two outs, throwing his final pitch of the at-bat to the backstop, but instead of seeing if he might remain wild, the Brewers had pinch-runner Brandon Lockridge try to take second and saw him caught stealing to end the game. Miller reached 30 saves for the first time in his career. He had 28 in 55 appearances as a rookie two years ago and 22 last year after becoming a setup man for Robert Suarez with the trade to the Padres.

He struck out seven. It’s the second time Henderson has allowed three runs this season; he’s given up two or fewer in his remaining nine starts. The loss makes him 6-2 with a 2.88 ERA ahead of a probable start Sunday against the Dodgers.

Yelich had a chance to maybe do something in the ninth, too, but pinch-runner Brandon Lockridge was easily thrown out trying to steal with Yelich taking a 1-1 ball from Mason Miller, ending the game. Yelich’s homer off Casey Mize was his eighth of the year.

Soroka missed almost two months with a left glute strain, but returned Monday with an excellent start against the Rockies. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out three. Soroka was limited to 77 pitches in this one and seems like he’ll be on a pitch count for the next few starts until he’s completely stretched out. He lowered his ERA to 2.92 this season. Soroka is lined up to face the Braves on the road this weekend.
