Paul Blackburn tossed four scoreless innings to pick up a save Tuesday against the Phillies.
Blackburn struck out four and lowered his spring ERA to 1.48 in 12 1/3 innings. It’d be rather odd if the Yankees employed both Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough in middle relief — a lot of teams won’t even carry one true long man — but that would seem to be the initial play. One of the two would likely sub in if a starter goes down in the short term, but if the current rotation stays healthy, things will get very cramped once Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole are back.

Padres selected the contract of RHP Walker Buehler from Triple-A El Paso.
Buehler was torched for four homers in his final spring training outing but still managed to secure a spot in San Diego’s season-opening rotation. The 31-year-old former fantasy ace can be safely ignored in most fantasy formats based on his underwhelming performance between the Phillies and Red Sox last year.
Brown, Cease sneaky picks to win AL Cy Young award
Jay Croucher and Trysta Krick predict who will win the American League Cy Young award, sharing why Astros pitcher Hunter Brown is a good bet and Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease has "killer stuff" and a "lot of upside."
  • SD 1st Baseman
Padres selected the contract of 1B Ty France from Triple-A El Paso.
France will open the season on San Diego’s bench after making the club as a non-roster invitee this spring. The 31-year-old hit .257 with seven homers and 52 RBI over 490 plate appearances between the Blue Jays and Twins last year.
  • SD 3rd Baseman #24
Padres placed INF Sung-Mun Song on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain.
As expected, Song hits the injured list after aggravating an oblique strain earlier this month. The 29-year-old is expected to occupy a versatile multi-position role in his San Diego debut this season.
  • SD 3rd Baseman #7
Padres placed INF Will Wagner on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain.
Wagner is likely to miss a couple weeks after suffering an oblique strain during spring training. The 27-year-old’s path to regular at-bats is extremely narrow in San Diego given their surplus of quality options across the infield.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #44
Padres placed RHP Joe Musgrove on the 15-day injured list.
Musgrove receives some additional time to continue ramping up his throwing program in the minor leagues after experiencing some issues bouncing back after Cactus League outings this spring. The 33-year-old veteran remains without a clear return timeline heading into the regular season, which makes it challenging for fantasy managers to stash him, with the exception of extremely deep mixed leagues.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #40
Padres placed RHP Jason Adam on the 15-day injured list.
It was looking like Adam would be ready for the start of the regular season after making a handful of Cactus League appearances at the end of spring training. The 34-year-old veteran reliever will get a little extra time in the minors as he works his way back from last year’s quad surgery.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #1
Padres placed LHP Yuki Matsui on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain.
Matsui has already progressed to facing hitters and should be ready to return to San Diego’s relief corps at some point in April. The 30-year-old missed the World Baseball Classic due to the ailment after 125 relief appearances for the Padres over the past two seasons.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #17
Padres placed RHP Griffin Canning on the 15-fay injured list.
Canning might be an option for San Diego’s pitching staff at some point in May or June as he continues to work his way back from last year’s Achilles tear. The 29-year-old is a worthwhile stash candidate in extremely deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats once he starts a minor league rehab assignment.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #71
Rays selected the contract of LHP Cam Booser and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.
Booser will remain with the Rays organiaztion despite missing out on a bullpen spot. The 33-year-old southpaw allowed one earned run and posted a 12/4 K/BB in innings this spring.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #78
Padres placed RHP Bryan Hoeing on the 15-day injured list.
The move is merely a formality since Hoeing will miss the entire season recovering from flexor tendon surgery. He’ll be shifted to the 60-day injured list at some point to free up a spot on San Diego’s 40-man roster.
