Rays placed RHP Joe Boyle on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 10, with a right elbow strain.

Elbow issues are never a great sign and Boyle is going to wind up missing some time, even if this is a relatively minor concern. The 26-year-old is extremely talented, but has had trouble consistently throwing strikes in the majors over the past couple years. There should be a rough timeline on his outlook at some point in the near future.

Matt Shaw (hand) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Shaw figures to be in the mix for starts between second and third base, along with rookie Pedro Ramírez, while shortstop Dansby Swanson is on the injured list with an oblique strain for the next month. The 24-year-old former top prospect has been on the injured list with a hand strain since late June. He should make it back to Chicago at some point before the end of August.

Jason Adam (shoulder) has progressed to playing light catch.

Adam told reporters afterwards that he’s pain-free after throwing for the first time since hitting the injured list with a shoulder strain back in early July. He’ll need a couple weeks to ramp-up his throwing progression, but he figures to make it back to San Diego’s bullpen at some point in September.

Joe Mack is out of the lineup for Monday’s game against the Phillies with right shoulder soreness.

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough indicated that Mack is probably going to need a couple days off to rest and recover. It doesn’t sound like there’s a high level of concern that he’ll require a trip to the injured list. It’ll be Brian Navaretto handling the catching duties for the second straight game with Agustin Ramírez at DH. The 23-year-old defensive specialist has hit .240 with 12 homers in 243 plate appearances since arriving in the big leagues back in early May.

Andrew Nardi will undergo season-ending left elbow surgery.

Nardi experienced elbow discomfort while working his way back from a stress reaction in his ribs that put him on the injured list back in late May. The exact type of surgery won’t be known until after the procedure, but Nardi is likely facing an extended absence. He figures to miss all of next year.

Hunter Goodman (shoulder) was scratched from the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

Not great. Goodman, who was in Colorado’s initial lineup at catcher and hitting third, will instead sit out his fourth consecutive game due to left shoulder inflammation. At this point, it’s challenging to dismiss the possibility of a trip to the injured list. There should be a more definitive update on his status at some point this week.

Cubs recalled RHP Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa.

Assad finds himself right back in Chicago’s rotation with Edward Cabrera heading back to the injured list with a blister. The 29-year-old has posted a solid 3.59 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 53/21 K/BB ratio across 80 1/3 innings in the majors this season.

Cubs recalled INF Owen Miller from Triple-A Iowa.

Miller figures to be part of Chicago’s plan to replace shortstop Dansby Swanson although he’s unlikely to spend any actual time at that spot. He’s more of a bench option and part-time second base fill-in. He got into nine games for the Rockies last year before signing a minor league pact with the Cubs prior to spring training.

Cubs recalled OF Kevin Alcántara from Triple-A Iowa.

Alcántara returns to the majors to occupy a bench role with Dansby Swanson on the injured list. The 24-year-old top prospect hasn’t gotten much of an opportunity at the highest level, but he’s showed some interesting power upside at the Triple-A level.

Cubs optioned INF James Triantos to Triple-A Iowa.

Triantos returns to the minors after going 1-for-8 at the dish during a seven-game stint with the Cubs. The 23-year-old is one of the better prospects in Chicago’s system and should receive a more extended opportunity in the future.

Cubs placed SS Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Swanson has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain and they’re hoping that he’s able to return in roughly four weeks. The 32-year-old veteran has graded out as a top-10 fantasy option this season, hitting .216/.300/.404 with 78 runs scored, 18 homers, 66 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 458 plate appearances. It sounds like there’s a decent chance that he’s ready for the start of the postseason, if the Cubs make it that far. It’ll be Nico Hoerner taking over at shortstop with rookie Pedro Ramírez seeing the bulk of the playing time at second base.
