José Fermín started the ninth with a homer that made it a one-run game. After that came a walk to Victor Scott II, a two-out walk to Alex Burleson and a game-tying single from Jordan Walker. It’s Santillan’s third blown save, and it bodes particularly poorly for him that both Graham Ashcraft (1 2/3 scoreless) and Pierce Johnson (scoreless 10th and 11th innings and a win) did very well tonight. It may be some time before Santillan gets another save chance.

Turner exited the game after getting hurt, but he was walking around fine after the game. Consider him probable for Sunday.

Skenes’ fastball last time out averaged 95.7 mph, down 1.2 mph from his season average, and he was pulled after just 65 pitches against the Marlins. There’s no injury being disclosed, but obviously something isn’t quite right. “Everyone is dealing with stuff this year,” Kelly said. “But he’s given us no indication that it’s injury related.” The Pirates will have Lake Backar open in Skenes’ place.

Gray gave up six hits, walked one and struck out seven. He improved to 15-3 with the win. Gray is quietly in the middle of one of the best seasons of his career at age-36. His 2.65 ERA is his first sub-3.00 ERA since 2023 with the Twins and his 15 wins are a career-high. With about six weeks still left in the regular season, he could flirt with 20 wins. Gray will face the Giants at home in his next start on Friday.

Stott’s home run was his ninth of the year. He hit a three-run shot off Connor Pirellipp in the fifth inning. Stott is 17-for-45 (.377) with eight runs, one home run, eight RBI and five stolen bases in 14 games so far in August. He’s hitting .266 with a .763 OPS and 57 RBI on the year.

Bohm raised his season average from .230 to .239 in one day. He hit three doubles and two singles as he went 5-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win over the Twins on Saturday. Bohm entered the month hitting .223 and now has hits in 11-of-14 games so far in August. He’s hitting .239 with a .674 OPS and 64 RBI.

Prielipp gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out six. He fell to 3-6 with the loss. While the Phillies hit Prielipp hard, he helped hold Kyle Schwarber to an 0-for-5 and allowed just a single and a walk to Bryce Harper. The only extra-base hits against Prielipp were two doubles by Alec Bohm and a three-run home run by Bryston Stott. Prielipp has a 5.34 ERA, but his 4.02 xFIP shows he’s been unlucky this year. He’s lined up to face the Padres on the road next weekend.

Luzardo gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out nine. He improved to 11-5 with the win. Luzardo was staked to an 8-0 lead before he allowed a run in the sixth inning. Since the beginning of July, he’s won five of eight starts. Luzardo has a 3.23 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Cardinals at home next weekend.

Donovan was just 5-for-29 (.172) with one double, one run scored and one RBI in eight games since retiring from the injured list entering play Saturday. The Mariners moved him into the lead-off spot and Donovan responded with three hits and three RBI. He’s hitting .263 with a .751 OPS and 12 RBI this year.

Paredes’ home run was his 16th of the year. He hit a two-run shot off Mariners reliever Jose A. Ferrer in the eighth inning. Paredes hit five home runs in June and four in July, but this was his first home run in 13 August games. He’s hitting .260 with a .775 OPS and 67 RBI.
