Rangers activated RHP Cole Winn from the 15-day injured list.

Winn returns to Texas’ relief corps ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Royals after missing just over two weeks with arm fatigue. The 26-year-old middle reliever holds a serviceable 5.59 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 23/7 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings of work this season.

Garrett Whitlock (elbow) is expected to return before Saturday’s game against the Yankees.

Whitlock would end up missing just the minimum 15-day stint if he does receive that activation. The 30-year-old will be a high-leverage option whether he returns to the Red Sox on Saturday or a day or two later.

Cubs activated LHP Hoby Milner of the 15-day injured list and placed him on outright waivers.

Miler has been on the injured list since the end of June while recovering from appendicitis. The left-hander will hit the wire and be eligible to be claimed, and if he isn’t, he’ll either elect free agency or report to Triple-A Iowa.

Justin Crawford is not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Angels.

Crawford will get a night of rest against the Halos. Derek Hill — who had been dealing with neck stiffness — will be in center and hit ninth against Reid Detmers and the Angels.

Spencer Jones is on the bench Friday for the first time since Aug. 28.

Heliot Ramos, meanwhile, is making his first start in six days against Red Sox left-hander Patrick Sandoval. With Cody Bellinger back, it looks like Jones and Ramos could be in a straight platoon for now, though Jones could maybe start over Trent Grisham against some lefties. Jones actually has a 1.079 OPS in 34 plate appearances in lefty-lefty matchups. He has a .648 OPS in 155 plate appearances against righties.

The slumping Ronald Acuña Jr. is batting cleanup Friday against the Rockies.

Acuña had previously hit only first and second this season. Ozzie Albies, who is hitting .230/.286/.374 in 398 plate appearances since May 10, is batting second tonight.

Byron Buxton could be looking at offseason hip surgery, according to Twins GM Jeremy Zoll.

Buxton is still very much day-to-day for now, with no plans for him to go on the injured list, so it sounds like he’d prefer to grind it out through September. However, one wonders if things might change if the Twins fall out of contention. Walker Jenkins is making his MLB debut in center field with Buxton absent tonight.

James Wood, out since Aug. 4 with an oblique strain, took batting practice prior to Friday’s game.

Manager Blake Butera indicated that Wood wouldn’t require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Nationals. If he’s still feeling good tomorrow after the BP session, it probably won’t be long before he’s activated.

Connelly Early, who is making his way back from elbow inflammation, is on track to start a rehab assignment on Sept. 8.

Early might come off the IL to make an appearance or two at the end of the year. He presumably won’t be fully built up for five- or six-inning starts.

Brendan Donovan won’t return from the concussion IL when first eligible Saturday.

Wilson is with the Mariners and doing pregame workouts, so it sounds like he’s making steady progress from the batting cage accident that took place last week.

Angels activated OF Wade Meckler from the seven-day concussion injured list.

Back after missing the minimum, Meckler is starting in left field and batting third tonight against the Phillies. He hit .231/.310/.250 with no RBI in the 14 games before getting hurt on a HBP.
