NORTON, Mass. – Don’t count Geoff Ogilvy out just yet.
Ogilvy began the Deutsche Bank Championship at No. 100 in the FedEx Cup standings, with the longest odds of anyone in the field to reach next week’s BMW Championship. After a 6-under 65 in the third round, though, the Aussie’s hopes of advancing to Denver are very much alive.
Ogilvy started slowly Sunday, parring his first nine holes, before a birdie on No. 10 opened the floodgates. He added circles on Nos. 12, 15 and 16 before capping an inward 29 with an eagle on the par-5 18th.
“It’s amazing what a couple of putts will do to your demeanor and the scorecard and everything,” Ogilvy said. “Basically I just found the putter for the last nine holes, which is fun.”

Ogilvy has struggled this season outside of a victory this month at the Barracuda Championship, but the volatility of the playoffs can work in favor of players who heat up at the right time.
“I guess that’s the beauty of these things,” he said. “I think they’ve got the balance pretty right, of rewarding the guys’ good years and giving everyone in the field a chance to have a little bit of glory or fun in the playoffs.”
Early-week estimates showed Ogilvy would need a top-13 finish to advance to Cherry Hills, although revised projections from the PGA Tour indicate he will likely need closer to a top-10 result Monday. Either way, Ogilvy will take a carefree approach into the final round since he expected his season to be over after missing the cut last week at The Barclays.
“Everything is a bonus,” he said. “It’s nice to still have a reason to come out and have a good round tomorrow.”
