Nick Faldo has withdrawn his name for consideration to be Europes captain in the 2004 Ryder Cup.

The 45-year-old Englishman said Thursday he believes Sam Torrance should continue as captain at Oakland Hills in two years. Torrance led the Europeans to victory last week at The Belfry, but has expressed reluctance in maintaining his leadership role.

He did a fantastic job, Faldo said. He spoke well, came up with great partnerships and created a great team spirit. Going on that performance, I’d definitely vote for him for the next one.

Faldo played in 11 straight Ryder Cups from 1977 to 1997. The event’s all-time points earner hopes to make the team again.

‘I think I’ll try and give it one more go,’ Faldo said. ‘They inspired me. I thought it would be great to get my teeth into something that will motivate me.’
