Champions Tour Releases 2004 Schedule

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Champions Tour released its schedule for the 2004 season on Monday and it features 30 official Charles Schwab Cup events. Prize money for the upcoming year is expected to exceed $52.5 million.

The schedule kicks off in Hawaii with the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai Golf Club the week of January 19-25 and wraps up with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif., the week of October 18-24.

‘The 2004 Champions Tour schedule features smooth geographic swings and strong continuity in terms of sites and title sponsors,’ said Champions Tour president Rick George. ‘The Champions Tour approaches the 2004 season with a significant amount of momentum and we are very excited about the year ahead.’

The first of the five majors will be the Senior PGA Championship, this year to be played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., the week of May 24-30.

Once again, the month of July is major month with straight events as majors. The Ford Senior Players Championship will be played July 5-11 at the TPC of Michigan in Dearborn. Two weeks later, the Senior British Open Championship will be contested at Royal Portrush Golf Club, in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

The last of the three majors will be the U.S. Senior Open Championship to be played the week of July 26 through August 1. The event will take place at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.

The fifth and final major takes place August 23-29 when the JELD-WEN Tradition is contested at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha, Ore.

The lone new event on the docket is the Champions Tour at Augusta Pines, which will be played in Houston, Texas the week of October 4-10.

The Allianz Championship was the biggest mover on the schedule. It was bumped up from late August to the week of May 17-23. The Bayer Advantage Celebrity Pro-Am moved to the week of June 7-13 from the middle of May. The FleetBoston Classic also moved from August to June. It will be played June 21-27 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Mass.

The Champions Tour will have television coverage for all 30 official events, with The Golf Channel airing 24 of the 30. The remaining six events will rotate between ABC, CBS and NBC.

The Turtle Bay Championship was left off the 2004 schedule, but will return in 2005. The event, played October 10-12, 2003, is shifting to January for the 2005 season and will be part of the ‘Aloha Season.’
