Odom signed a minor league contract with the Mariners back in March and has been cut loose after hitting .231/.328/.447 with 10 homers and two steals in 238 plate appearances for Triple-A Tacoma. The 30-year-old backstop has appeared in 20 games in the majors for the Mariners and Rays since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Odom served as organizational catching depth last year for the Rays, hitting .217/.305/.359 with three homers in 205 plate appearances at Triple-A Durham. He last appeared in the majors during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign with the Mariners. He’ll provide Seattle with some emergency catching depth this season.

Odom served as organizational catching depth for the Rays, appearing in two games at the major-league level this season. The 29-year-old backstop should be able to find a new home this offseason, but will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal.

Odom cleared waivers after being designated for assignment late last week. He’ll stick around as organizational depth.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Hunter Strickland. Odom will probably clear waivers.

Odom is taking the major-league roster spot of left-hander Ryan Sherriff, who was placed on the team’s restricted list.

Odom looked overmatched at the plate during his brief time with the Mariners in 2020, which was no surprise because he’s never really hit in the minors, either. He’s merely a depth piece.

The Mariners are doing a little 40-man roster housecleaning. Odom went 5-for-39 at the plate for Seattle this season.

It sounds like a day-to-day situation. Austin Nola will move to first base and Joe Odom will enter the lineup at catcher.

The 28-year-old will add depth behind the plate for the Mariners. He has appeared in two games this season, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a walk in five plate appearances.
