Fargas signed a minor league contract with the Mets back in early March and hit just .212/.305/.340 with eight homers and 28 steals in 301 plate appearances this season between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. The 27-year-old speedy outfielder got into 22 games last year between the Mets and Cubs at the big-league level.

The 27-year-old outfielder made his big league debut with the Mets during the 2021 season before ultimately getting designated for assignment in July and picked up by the Cubs. He hit .250/.264/.385 with a 15/1 K/BB ratio in 54 plate appearances at the big league level between the two clubs. Fargas will add minor league outfield depth for the Mets.

Fargas appeared in 15 games for the Cubs after being scooped off waivers from the Mets in late July. The 26-year-old outfielder will continue to serve as organizational position player depth moving forward.

He’ll take the place of Nick Martini on the active roster after he was placed on the COVID-19 IL on Friday. Fargas, 26, has hit a respectable .277/.292/.426 with five RBI and a 15/1 K/BB ratio in 49 plate appearances between the Mets and Cubs on the season.

Fargas was designated for assignment earlier in the week, but passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to provide additional outfield depth for the Cubs. Fargas is removed from the roster to make room for Adrian Sampson after Sampson had his contract purchased. The 26-year-old has hit .269 with a .642 OPS over 27 plate appearances. It’s possible there will be interest in Fargas on the waiver wire.

Fargas picked up an RBI infield single in the sixth inning, but that merely drew the Cubbies to within 6-2 on the scoreboard. They would manage one more run in the contest -- via a Patrick Wisdom solo homer -- but no more. In seven games with the Cubs this season after being designated for assignment by the Mets in mid-July, Fargas is still looking for his first extra-base knock.

The move was made prior to Friday’s contest against the Nationals. Fargas -- who was claimed off of waivers from the Mets last week -- hit .286/.286/.524 with three RBI in his first 22 plate appearances at the big league level earlier this season.

He’s been assigned to Triple-A Iowa. Fargas injured his left shoulder back in late May and it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to play again.

The move frees up a 40-man roster spot. Fargas has been on the injured list since late May with a left shoulder injury.
