He got the nod over Vincent Jackson in place of injured Eric Parker. Jackson quickly answered on the first drive with a diving, over-the-shoulder TD catch in blanket coverage by Packers CB Ahmad Carroll.

Despite the absence of Jason Hill, Osgood was targeted once on Sunday. A career special teamer, Osgood’s use on offense will be extremely limited this year.

“We have moved on years ago,” Smith said of Tomlinson. “We wish him the very best in his search for the team he feels is the best fit for him. We are looking at four backs right now but we may slow down that search a little bit.” Of Osgood, the always brusque Smith added, “Kassim wants to be a receiver and that just is not going to happen with us.”

Osgood was due in excess of $2 million, which the Jags deemed too expensive for a one-trick pony special teamer who turns 32 in May. Osgood can still run down kickoffs and punts, but he couldn’t even beat out Chastin West for playing time at receiver last season. Osgood may resurface for the NFL minimum.

Osgood has no catches on the season even though the Jaguars field one of the league’s worst receiver corps. “I feel like they put the baby in a corner. Now I know what they think of me,” Osgood said on Twitter. The career special teamer has an inflated perception of his skills as a pass-catcher.

The 32-year-old Osgood is a coverage teams specialist, running down kickoffs and punts. His addition could be a bad sign for fifth receiver Maurice Stovall.

He may get to start with Reche Caldwell out, but Osgood isn’t a fantasy option.

Even with the touchdown he’s not a good option in fantasy leagues.

There were reports earlier in free agency that Osgood had re-signed with the Lions, but they proved to be erroneous. A linchpin special teamer, Osgood has appeared in at least 12 games every year since 2003.

Osgood’s value is on special teams. He doesn’t play offense at all, and couldn’t even get on the field last year as the Lions went through a bevy of receivers.
