Saints LB Kiko Alonso announced his retirement from the NFL.
Alonso hasn’t actually played in the NFL since 2019, but he rejoined the Saints on Thursday. After three days at training camp, Alonso decided to officially hang it up a week shy of his 32nd birthday. Alonso began his NFL career in Buffalo when the Bills selected him in the second round of the 2013 draft. He spent time in Philadelphia before catching on in Miami and logging three consecutive seasons of 115+ tackles. His final season was spent in New Orleans, in which he appeared in 13 games, starting four. Alonso finishes his career with 588 tackles, 369 solo tackles, and 30 tackles for a loss in 86 career appearances.

    Saints signed LB Kiko Alonso.
Now 31 years old, Alonso has not played since 2019. He had an injury washout in 2020 and remained unsigned for 2021. Alonso flashed explosive early-career play-making ability, but it was steadily eroded by injury. He knows Dennis Allen’s system after playing for the Saints in 2019-20, but it seems like an extreme long shot that he actually makes the 53-man roster considering his age and injury history.

49ers LB Kiko Alonso (knee) will finish the season on the reserve/PUP list.
The 49ers did not activate Alonso before the deadline. Alonso is only a Niner because he was traded by the Saints to help offset Kwon Alexander’s salary. He is in the final year of his contract. Now on the wrong side of 30 with an increasingly lengthy injury history and declining play, Alonso will have his work cut out for him to earn a 2021 role somewhere.

49ers acquired LB Kiko Alonso and a conditional fifth-round pick from the Saints in exchange for LB Kwon Alexander.
It’s the rare player-for-player deal as the Saints were simply willing to take on Alexander and, more importantly, the $33 million against the cap he accounts for over the next two seasons. Alonso, 30, has yet to play this year after suffering a torn ACL in New Orleans’ Wild Card loss to Minnesota but did record 31 tackles in 13 games with the Saints last season. Alonso is set to enter free agency in March.

Saints activated LB Kiko Alonso (knee) from the reserve/PUP list.
Assuming he’s active, Sunday will be Alonso’s first game action since he tore his ACL in January’s Wild Card loss to the Vikings. The team also activated Ty Montgomery from injured reserve.

Saints placed LB Kiko Alonso (knee) on the reserve/PUP list.
It will cost Alonso the first six games of the season. Alonso is working his way back from the third torn ACL of his career. He agreed to a pay cut in March.

Saints placed LB Kiko Alonso on the active/PUP list.
Alonso is working his way back from a January torn ACL — the third one of his career. He’ll miss the early stages of training camp and isn’t a lock to be ready for Week 1. Alonso’s roster spot is safe after restructuring in March.

Saints restructured LB Kiko Alonso’s contract.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Alonso will now take home less than the $7.8 million he was scheduled to make. These are the type of moves New Orleans has made as they’ve pushed Drew Brees’ cap hits to future years. Alonso will be returning from a torn ACL this upcoming season, but he’s been “making great strides” in his rehab thus far.

Physical therapist Sharif Tabbah said Saints LB Kiko Alonso (knee) has been “making great strides in just a few short weeks” following his torn ACL suffered in New Orleans’ Wild Card loss to the Vikings.
Alonso is undergoing the early stages of his rehab with Tabbah and “should be ready” for Week 1. The seventh-year linebacker notched 31 tackles over 13 appearances with the Saints last year, but his explosiveness following the third ACL surgery of his career remains a question mark. Alonso is fully expected to miss all of OTAs.

Saints LB Kiko Alonso tore his ACL in Sunday’s Wild Card loss to the Vikings.
Alonso is headed for his third ACL surgery. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero hears he should be ready for Week 1. The seventh-year linebacker logged 31 tackles over 13 appearances including four starts in his debut season with New Orleans.
