Bird made 12 relief appearances for the Rangers during the 2019 season and spent the entire 2021 campaign overseas with the Hiroshima Carp of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. The 28-year-old southpaw will bolster the Mariners’ relief depth at Triple-A Tacoma to open the 2022 campaign.

Bird was designated for assignment last Wednesday to make room on the 40-man roster for Todd Frazier. The 26-year-old lefty posted an awful 7.82 ERA and 2.05 WHIP over 12 2/3 innings with Texas in 2019.

Texas has also placed Jeffrey Springs on waivers in freeing up roster spots for Todd Frazier and Robinson Chirinos. Bird, 26, posted a horrific 7.82 ERA and 2.05 WHIP over his first 12 2/3 major league innings in 2019.

The 26-year-old southpaw has been a disaster in 12 outings with the Rangers this season, posting a 7.82 ERA, 2.05 WHIP and 10/15 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings. He’ll work on his command in the minors.

He’ll take the roster spot vacated by Joe Palumbo, who is headed back to Nashville. Bird has had a tough go of it in the big leagues this year, logging an underwhelming 6.75 ERA with 10 walks and just five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings as a lefty specialist out of the Rangers’ pen.

Fellow left-hander Kyle Bird was promoted from Nashville in the corresponding roster move. Palumbo has been hit hard at the major-league level this year, struggling to an 11.00 ERA in three appearances including two starts for the Rangers.

A corresponding move will be made on Tuesday. The 26-year-old southpaw has posted a 6.75 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 5/10 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings with the big league club this season, but didn’t appear in a game this time around. He’ll continue to function as bullpen depth at Triple-A.

Bird will return to the Rangers’ bullpen ahead of Thursday afternoon’s series finale against the Indians. He owns an ugly 6.75 ERA and 2.10 WHIP in 6 2/3 innings this season at the major league level.

Bird holds a 6.75 ERA over five relief appearances with the big club this season. He’ll give the Rangers a second lefty in the bullpen.
