    Austin Brice announced his retirement from baseball on Wednesday.
    Brice, 32, spent time in the majors every year from 2016-22 and enjoyed his most success in 2019, when he had a 3.43 ERA in 44 2/3 innings out of the Marlins pen. Overall, he had a 5.12 ERA in 144 appearances, all but one coming in relief.

    The former first-round pick by the Braves will be used as a depth piece for the Phillies’ pitching this season. He was limited last season due to a shoulder injury, but made three starts and one relief appearance for Atlanta, amassing a 6.57 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. Allard tossed 5 2/3 innings of spring ball and allowed two earned runs on six hits.

    Brice spent the 2023 campaign at Triple-A for the Diamondbacks and Twins, posting a 6.92 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across 37 appearances. The 31-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 but he will give the Phillies relief depth in the upper minors.

    Brice surrendered 12 runs (eight earned) on six hits with a 3/9 K/BB ratio across three innings (five appearances) so far this season at Triple-A Reno. The 30-year-old righty made four relief appearances last year for the Pirates. He signed a minor league contract last December with the Diamondbacks.

    Adams isn’t yet ready to pitch after flexor tendon surgery last August. Once healthy, he could be capable of helping the Diamondbacks out of the pen. He had a 4.10 ERA for the Padres in 2021 before missing almost all of last year.

The 30-year-old righty will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training this offseason.
