Carlton Loewer will be called up to make Saturday’s start against Atlanta.
Loewer has cooled a bit since his hot start for Triple-A Portland. He may just be up for one game, so hold off on signing him.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings yesterday for Triple-A Portland.
It would be great to see Loewer make it back to the majors after missing most of the last three seasons. Since he has a 2.38 ERA after two starts, it looks like it might happen pretty soon.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings Friday against the Diamondbacks.
Loewer is pitching well enough to stick around, but even though we’d like to, we can’t recommend him in NL-only leagues.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer allowed five runs and eight hits in one inning of work on Wednesday.
Loewer was decent against the Braves and Diamondbacks, but the Brewers had no trouble with him. Fortunately for the Padres, Charles Nagy followed with five scoreless innings of relief. They ended up winning the game with a walk-off homer.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer allowed one run in five innings Monday to win for the first time since May 4, 1999.
It’s great to see Loewer back pitching effectively after all of his troubles, but he isn’t yet recommended in NL-only leagues.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Padres purchased the contract of RHP Carlton Loewer from Triple-A Portland.
Loewer will start tomorrow against the Braves. He might have some success against National League hitters who haven’t seen him in several years, but it’s not a good idea to pick him up.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer allowed four runs -- three earned -- and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday in his return to the majors.
Loewer wasn’t exactly impressive, but he gave the Padres all they should have hoped for and he was doing it on three days’ rest. The three earned runs all scored in the fifth and it was a bloop single with two outs that accounted for the final two. Loewer isn’t someone to pick up in NL-only leagues, but it would be nice to see him stick around for a while.

The Padres might not wait until Adam Eaton is ready to put Clay Condrey back in the bullpen, which could mean that Carlton Loewer will be called up to start Saturday.
Condrey has been awful as a starter, so the bullpen is the best place for him. If called up, Loewer might only make one start.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Padres sent RHP Carlton Loewer outright to Triple-A Portland.
Loewer had a 6.65 ERA in five starts. The Padres would prefer not to have to call on him again, but if they’re forced to, at least they know he can do a reasonable job as a fifth starter.
  • SD Starting Pitcher
Carlton Loewer is next in line to start for the Padres if they have a need in their rotation.
Loewer is 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA for Triple-A Portland. He’s not on the 40-man roster, but could easily be added by moving Phil Nevin or another long-term disability to the 60-day DL. ''He’s been doing everything required, including fielding his position,’' GM Kevin Towers said recently about Loewer. With Brian Lawrence and Adam Eaton not at 100 percent right now, Loewer is someone to consider adding as a reserve in NL-only leagues.
