Chin-Hui Tsao, the Rockies top prospect, will make his major league debut in a home start against Milwaukee Friday.
The Rockies have decided to give Tsao the first shot at Denny Neagle’s rotation spot. At Double-A Tulsa he posted an 11-4 record with a 2.46 ERA while holding hitters to a .214 average. We normally don’t recommend Rockies pitchers, as the risks are too high. This one has a chance, though.

Chin-Hui Tsao picked up a blister on his hand while pitching in the Olympics.
Tsao is scheduled to rejoin Triple-A Colorado Springs when he comes back. His health will determine if he is called up Sept. 1 when rosters expand.

The Rockies would like to pursue an experienced closer in the offseason, reluctant to commit to Chin-Hui Tsao in the role.
“It would be a lot to ask of (Tsao),” manager Clint Hurdle said. “We are still gathering a lot of information.” Regardless, it’s not likely the Rockies will be able to afford a big-name closer, and Tsao is comfortable in a relief role. He’s the leading candidate at this time.

On his first day on the active roster, Chin-Hui Tsao pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
It was also his debut as a reliever. He hit 97 mph on his fastball and demonstrated good command of his slider.

Because of his Olympic participation, Chin-Hui Tsao’s military service time in Taiwan has been cut from 1 year, 10 days to just 12 days.
He can fulfill his 12-day obligation by conducting youth baseball clinics in the offseason.

Chin-Hui Tsao’s shoulder passed an examination by team doctors.
One his finger blister heals, Tsao will join Triple-A Colorado Springs.

In Chin-Hui Tsao’s first inning of work since returning from the Olympics, he allowed a home run that eliminated Triple-A Colorado Springs from the PCL playoffs.
Tsao may be called up to the Rockies Tuesday, though if he pitches, it would be only briefly in relief. Others being considered for a promotion from Colorado Springs are Garrett Atkins (who will win the PCL batting title), outfielder Brad Hawpe, first baseman Andy Tracy and relievers Allan Simpson and Chris Gissell.

Rockies trainers will examine Chin-Hui Tsao’s right shoulder and a blister on his pitching hand before determining the next step in his season.
Tsao’s participation in the Olympics was supposed to waive his military obligation. However, because Chinese Taipei did not medal, there is some question if he will be excused from duty. GM Dan O’Dowd said Tsao is not guaranteed a September callup and may pitch in relief if he is added to the roster.

If the Rockies don’t sign a closer, manager Clint Hurdle said he would open camp with Brian Fuentes and Chin-Hui Tsao sharing the role.
Tsao would have the better chance of winning the job outright. However, the Rockies figure to bring in some additional competition before the start of the spring.

Because he was on the DL on Aug. 31, Chin-Hui Tsao won’t be eligible to help Taiwan qualify for the Olympics.
The Rockies intended to let Tsao take part in the qualifying tournament, but the rules prevent players who were on 25-man rosters on Aug. 31 from taking part. Although that’s bad news for Taiwan, it’s probably good for Tsao’s long-term health. The right-hander should be a part of Colorado’s rotation next season.
