Chase DeLauter doubled, singled and was hit by a pitch as the Guardians edged the Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday.

The HBP proved key, as DeLauter went on to score the go-ahead run on Nathaniel Lowe’s sac fly in the ninth. DeLauter upped his average to .292 tonight, placing him third in the AL.

Parker Messick pitched five innings of one-run ball Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Messick left with a 2-1 lead, but Hunter Gaddis gave up a homer in the eighth to tie the game before the Guardians responded in the ninth. The no-decision keeps Messick 12-9 with a 2.55 ERA. He could pitch again Sunday, but if the Guardians clinch before then, he’ll almost certainly be held back for the Wild Card series.

Cade Smith threw a hitless ninth for his 40th save Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Smith walked one. Things got a little interesting on out No. 3, as first baseman Nathaniel Lowe initially went to his right to try for a grounder that was handled by Angel Genao at second base and then fell down trying to reverse direction. Genao, though, saw it all right away and won a footrace to first.
Brayan Rocchio

CLE Shortstop #4

Brayan Rocchio (leg) is back in the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Red Sox.

Rocchio is back at shortstop and hitting ninth after sitting out Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics with left leg tightness. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern as Cleveland enters the final week needing to finish one game ahead of the White Sox, who hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, to win the AL Central.

Cooper Ingle doubled twice and scored twice for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday.

Ingle’s introduction to the majors in June couldn’t have gone much worse, but he ends the Triple-A season with a fantastic .297/.424/.528 line and 20 homers in 471 plate appearances. That .952 OPS leads all qualified International League hitters, Ingle did go back to catching in the minors after being looked at a left fielder and DH during his brief time in the majors. It doesn’t seem like he has a future behind the plate in Cleveland, but his bat should make him of some use next year.
Gavin Williams

CLE Starting Pitcher #32

Gavin Williams fanned nine in seven innings as the Guardians bested the A’s 1-0 on Sunday.

It’s Williams’ fifth scoreless start of the year, and he has two others in which he allowed just one unearned run. With nine strikeouts, he now leads the majors at 244, though surely not for long; he’s one ahead of Jacob Misiorowski, who starts tonight. Williams is in line to make his final start Saturday, but the Guardians could tweak things based on how things are lining up for the playoffs. If the Guardians clinch the AL Central, then Williams could have a relatively normal start next weekend. However, if they fall into Wild Card position, then they would need Williams to start on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
Cade Smith

CLE Relief Pitcher #36

Cade Smith got four outs in a 1-0 game for his 39th save Sunday against the A’s.

Smith was called on after Hunter Gaddis gave up a pair of hits in the eighth. He struck out Henry Bolte to end the threat and then got two more K’s in the ninth. That brings his total to 103 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings this season. He finished with 104 in 73 2/3 innings last year and 103 in 75 1/3 innings as a rookie in 2024. Mason Miller is in line to smash some salary records as an arbitration-eligible reliever in the coming years, but Smith shouldn’t come in too far behind.
José Ramírez

CLE 3rd Baseman #11

José Ramírez went 2-for-4, stole a base and scored the only run of the game in Sunday’s win over the A’s.

Ramírez doubled to begin the fourth, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on Jo Adell’s tapper in front of the plate. The steal, his 35th of the year, came later in the eighth. He’s seventh in the majors in steals, and with just four caught stealings, he has the best success rate of any of the 12 players with 30 steals.
Brayan Rocchio

CLE Shortstop #4

Brayan Rocchio is absent from the Guardians’ starting lineup for Sunday’s skirmish against the Athletics.

There haven’t been any rumblings of Rocchio dealing with any sort of injury, so it looks like just a routine day of rest for the 25-year-old shortstop. Angel Genao will start in his place and will bat ninth against A’s right-hander Jack Perkins on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.
Angel Martínez

CLE Left Fielder #1

Angel Martínez went 4-for-5 with two homers, four RBI, and three runs scored to lead the Guardians to a 12-6 win over the Athletics on Saturday.

Martínez returned to the lineup for the first time since Monday and enjoyed an incredible day at the plate, starting with a two-run homer off Jacob Lopez in the first inning. He then doubled and scored in the third before taking Chris Roycroft deep for a solo blast in the fourth for his second home run of the game. Martínez collected a fourth hit and fourth RBI with a single in the sixth. The 24-year-old outfielder is hitting .255/.292/.467 with 17 homers, 47 runs scored, 57 RBI, and 11 steals across 390 plate appearances.
