Sanchez

Sanchez, who was called up on Monday, showed up late for yesterday’s game and lost his chance to pitch for the Pirates as a result.

With Yhency Brazoban out of the closer’s role, Sanchez is the current favorite for saves on the Dodgers. He has Steve Schmoll to contend with, but he’s worthy of a pickup in all leagues.

Sanchez is supposed to be in a committee with Steve Schmoll, but he’s going to be the heavy favorite for saves on the Dodgers if he keeps pitching like this.

Sanchez was supposed to share closing duties with Steve Schmoll, but it’s his job until he makes a mistake. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last five appearances.

Tom Glavine flashbacks, only far worse. Sanchez apparently was injured while riding as a passenger in a taxicab that was involved in a car accident Sunday night after the Mets landed in Miami. The Mets might now have to overpay to land some relief help. If Brad Lidge isn’t a possibility, Roberto Hernandez and Joe Borowski could be. Aaron Heilman probably can’t go anywhere now.

The Mets should know within a week whether Sanchez will need season-ending surgery. If it turns out that his labrum and rotator cuff are OK, a return in September would become a possibility.

If Sanchez can avoid surgery, he could return during the final month of the season. In the meantime, Roberto Hernandez will move into his setup role.

GM Omar Minaya said Sanchez should be ready for spring training. Aaron Heilman and Roberto Hernandez will be used as Billy Wagner’s setup men.

Sanchez hadn’t pitched since suffering a pinched nerve in his neck on Friday.

Sanchez, who was hurt last night, underwent an MRI on his shoulder, which came back negative. He might be available as soon as Sunday.
