Mariners acquired RHP Gaby Hernandez from the Marlins for LHP Arthur Rhodes.
A nice pickup for the Mariners. Hernandez’s stock is down over the last year, and he was recently demoted to Double-A after going 2-8 with a 7.24 ERA at Triple-A Albuquerque. Still, he’s just 22 and his struggles may have been related to an abominal strain that limited him in April and May. He could yet make it as a fourth or fifth starter. The Mariners will put him in either Double- or Triple-A.

Hernandez hadn’t pitched since April 22 due to a strained intercostal muscle. He has a 6.92 ERA in five starts.

Hernandez has allowed one run in seven innings. The 21-year-old will need at least Sergio Mitre to open the season on the disabled list if he’s going to have a shot at a rotation spot. Realistically, he’s looking at a stint in Triple-A and maybe a midseason debut in the majors.

Hernandez had a decent enough spring, posting a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings, but he’s still clearly fallen behind Chris Volstad on the depth chart. He’ll be a part of the rotation at Triple-A Albuquerque.

Hernandez was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox earlier this month.
