Jayson Nix has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing at Triple-A.
Nix, who has seen his prospect stock drop dramatically over the past couple seasons, is expected to undergo surgery Monday.

Jayson Nix connected on his first home run of the season Saturday in New York, helping to lead the Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the Mariners.
Nix went yard off Hector Noesi in the second inning. He has been used very sparingly in the early part of the season and is doubtful to suddenly gain fantasy relevance.

Yankees purchased the contract of INF Jayson Nix from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
With Eric Chavez ailing, the Yanks needed to add some emergency infield depth. Nix was batting .233/.314/.367 at the Triple-A level. He won’t carry any fantasy value.
  • NYY Shortstop
Derek Jeter will serve as the Yankees’ designated hitter Thursday night against the Royals.
Just a way to give Jeter a little bit of a breather. Eduardo Nunez will make the start at shortstop Thursday while the newly-promoted Jayson Nix plays left field and Andruw Jones plays right.

Yankees signed INF Jayson Nix to a minor league contract.
Nix batted just .169/.245/.309 over 136 at-bats in 2011. The deal with the Yanks includes an invitation to spring training, but Nix is a longshot to land a roster spot.
  • MIA Outfield #21
Curtis Granderson is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Blue Jays.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi is likely using Wednesday’s matinee as an opportunity to give Granderson a breather. DeWayne Wise will start in his place in center field. Derek Jeter is the DH on Wednesday while Jayson Nix plays shortstop.
  • NYY Designated Hitter #13
Alex Rodriguez will serve as the designated hitter again Tuesday.
A-Rod is dealing with some neck soreness and apparently isn’t ready to play the field. Jayson Nix will make the start at the hot corner Tuesday.
  • AZ Third Base Coach
Eric Chavez left Friday’s game against the Red Sox after being hit in the right shin by a pitch.
Chavez stayed in the game initially, but was replaced by Jayson Nix to begin the ninth inning after the injury stiffened up on him. He’s scheduled to be re-evaluated Saturday, but Nix will likely start the next two days with left-handers on the mound for Boston. Consider Chavez day-to-day for now.

The Yankees plan to stick with a platoon of Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix at third base while Alex Rodriguez (hand) is sidelined.
“If anything makes sense in our work, we’ll take a second look at it,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “But I don’t think we have to do anything.” Chavez has a solid .266/.328/.468 batting line with eight homers this season, so having him on the long side of a platoon could be worse. Both he and Nix are worth owning in AL-only leagues.
  • MLB 2nd Baseman #12
The Yankees want Eduardo Nunez to stay in the minors and play shortstop.
Nunez was mentioned as a possibility to fill in for Alex Rodriguez (hand) at third base, but the Yankees want him to focus on one position. Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix will be asked to split playing time at the hot corner for now.
