The good news is that the right shoulder discomfort that sidelined Colome in the first place, has abated. He will obviously not pitch again this season and the Rays are hoping that Dr. Andrews will find nothing seriously wrong with Colome’s pitching shoulder.

He left last night’s contest after facing just one batter. The Devil Rays are seriously thinking about shutting Colome down for the rest of season.

As Danys Baez has done a very good job as the Rays’ closer, and as there are competent setup men on the Tampa 25-roster, Colome will pitch in the middle innings. As such, he is not fantasy worthy.

Colome’s shoulder has been bothering him the past few days and he will likely not be able to throw in a game before the weekend. He is not yet a candidate for the disabled list.

Colome had been in extended spring training rehabbing his shoulder since signing with the Yankees on April 15. He might see time in the club’s bullpen in the second half.

Colome allowed two hits in the three innings. He is likely about a week away from being ready to join the Yankees’ bullpen.

Now it’s official that Colome is out for the season.

It wasn’t a save situation. After his struggles in his first two appearances, Colome probably won’t be used the next time the Rays have a save chance. That leaves Lance Carter and Travis Harper as candidates to close.

Piniella said that a change in his mechanics probably caused the swelling. Despite the disappointing finish, Colome made some real progress next year. If healthy, he could enter next season as Danys Baez’s top setup man.
