Ty Buttrey has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to a recurrence of right knee bursitis.
Buttrey briefly held a share of the Angels’ closer role this month, but he got lit up in his last two appearances and now his 2018 has come to a premature conclusion. The 25-year-old right-hander should have a prominent spot in the Angels’ bullpen leading into the 2019 season. Hansel Robles and Jim Johnson have earned the last two saves for Anaheim, with Blake Parker working more as a setup man recently.

Jim Johnson turned in a perfect ninth in a one-run game for his second save Wednesday against the Rangers.
Johnson got the call tonight with Blake Parker and Ty Buttrey both needing the day off and he got the job done with his first scoreless appearance in his last four outings. Johnson is carrying a 3.75 ERA, but he’s actually given up 37 runs -- 26 earned -- in 62 1/3 innings this year. He’ll probably have to settle for a minor league contract as a free agent this winter.

Jim Johnson recorded the final out in Tuesday’s 4-2 win against the Rays to earn his fifth save of the year.
Kevin Gregg hasn’t pitched since Saturday, so we’re somewhat surprised he wasn’t called in with a two-run lead in the ninth inning. Instead, Troy Patton recorded the first two outs before handing off to Johnson. Johsnon has certainly had a better year than the veteran closer with 18 holds and a 2.74 ERA in 82 innings out of the pen. Buck Showalter has remained loyal to Gregg this year, so we’ll wait to see what he has to say about his ninth-inning situation before speculating if Johnson has overtaken Gregg.

Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth against the Red Sox to earn his seventh save Monday.
Johnson’s sudden success at the end of games might throw a wrench into the Orioles’ plans to try him as a starter next year. He’s picked up saves in five of his last six appearances now, and he has a 2.70 ERA in 86 innings for the year.

Jim Johnson took a loss to the Tigers after giving up two runs in the ninth on Friday.
Johnson walked two and gave up a two-run triple to Tony Plagman, so this wasn’t his finest effort. He just hasn’t been particularly sharp since returning from his back woes, and the Orioles might not be comfortable letting him open the season as closer as is.

Jim Johnson got two outs in the ninth for a save Friday against the Twins.
Troy Patton started the ninth in a 4-0 game, but he was pulled after giving up a two-run homer to Josh Willingham, creating the save chance. Johnson, who wasn’t generally sharp in spring training after missing time with back issues, managed to retire two of the four hitters he faced to end it. He’ll continue to get the save chances in Baltimore.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter officially named Jim Johnson his closer.
He’s been the expected closer all along, and he’ll officially take the reins despite a 6.75 ERA and six walks in eight innings this spring. Despite his Grapefruit League struggles, Johnson is the best option for the job. We’re not terribly excited about him as a fantasy option, though, on that team and in that division.

Jim Johnson loaded the bases in the ninth on Thursday, but he still managed a scoreless inning for his sixth save of the year.
Johnson walked A.J. Pierzynski, gave up a single to Adam Dunn and hit Paul Konerko with a pitch before finishing the inning. It could have gone a lot worse: both of his strikeouts were called and both appeared to be on pitches outside of the zone. Regardless, he’s 6-for-6 saving games this season.

Jim Johnson (flu) is available to pitch Monday against the Yankees.
Johnson hasn’t pitched in a week due to a severe case of food poisoning, but he made it through a bullpen session Sunday with no issues. He should be ready to go for a potential save situation Monday night.

Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said Monday that he’s not ready to name Jim Johnson (back) as the team’s closer.
Johnson entered spring training as the assumed closer, but he has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut due to a back injury. His first appearance is scheduled for Wednesday. Showalter mentioned Kevin Gregg and Matt Lindstrom as potential alternatives for the closer gig, but we’re guessing he wants to see Johnson make it through a couple of appearances healthy before making an official decision.
