Quezada

Quezada went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with the Marlins as extra organizational relief depth. The 28-year-old right-hander has made four relief appearances in the majors over the last three years.

Quezada made just one appearance in his five days with the Marlins, walking five of the eight batters he faced and giving up three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Quezada, 28, had allowed three runs (two earned) with a 10/5 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this season. He actually appeared in three games with the Marlins in the truncated 2020 season and will hope for a longer stay this time around.

The 28-year-old hurler made his big league debut with the Marlins during the truncated 2020 season -- posting a 9.00 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over three innings in his three appearances. He’ll add bullpen depth in the upper minors to begin the 2023 campaign.

Quezada was designated for assignment Monday to free up a spot on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster for franchise legend Albert Pujols to return. The 27-year-old righty made three appearances with the Cardinals during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and spent all of last year between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. It’s possible he’s gobbled up off waivers in the coming days.

The Cardinals continue to pare down their roster with Opening Day less than two weeks away. Naughton was just claimed off waivers from the Angels earlier in the week, while Rondon, Quezada and Zeuch will serve as organizational pitching depth to open the 2022 season.

Quezada has been sidelined for the entire 2021 campaign due to lat strain. Barring any setbacks, it sounds like he could be an option for the Cardinals’ bullpen in the second half.

Quezada made his major league debut last summer with the Marlins and allowed three earned runs in three total innings of work. Philly had claimed him off waivers from Miami in late October but needed to clear out a 40-man roster spot for Didi Gregorius, whose reported two-year contract should be made official soon.

Quezada hadn’t pitched above A-ball before the Marlins gave him a cup of coffee this season. He figures to begin 2021 back in the minors.
