Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced Tuesday that John Farrell will return as manager in 2017.
His coaching staff has also been invited back. The Red Sox were swept at the hands of the Indians and Terry Francona in the ALDS, but they won 93 games during the regular season and there’s no need for a shakeup. 2017 will be Farrell’s fifth season as Boston’s manager. His contract includes a club option for 2018.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Frank Wren is unlikely to become the next general manager of the Red Sox.
Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is reportedly looking for a replacement internally after general manager Mike Hazen recently left to become executive vice president and general manager of the Diamondbacks. Wren, who served as Braves general manager from 2007-2014, is said to be happy with his current position as Red Sox senior VP of baseball operations. It’s worth noting that he was mostly based out of Atlanta this season, so he may prefer to be close to home. Multiple reports indicate that Red Sox vice president of international and amateur scouting Amiel Sawdaye could be the most likely fit.

According to Peter Gammons, Amiel Sawdaye is weighing whether to accept the job as Red Sox general manager or to take an opportunity elsewhere.
Sawdaye, the vice president of international and amateur scouting for the Red Sox, is team president Dave Dombrowski’s top choice to replace Mike Hazen who vacated the general manager’s position to become the executive vice president and general manager of the Diamondbacks. Gammons notes that Sawdaye could follow Hazen to Arizona and take the assistant general manager’s job there and there’s also a chance he could join the Twins’ front office.

Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have hired Gary DiSarcina as their new bench coach.
He replaced Torey Lovullo, who left to become the Diamondbacks’ manager. DiSarcina was the manager for Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox’ organization in 2013 and has been a coach for the Angels the last three seasons.

The Red Sox have promoted Eddie Romero to senior vice president and assistant general manager.
The Red Sox have rearranged their front office after general manager Mike Hazen and vice president of amateur and international scouting Amiel Sawdaye both left for the Diamondbacks. Romero, who previously served as vice president of international scouting, and Brian O’Halloran will serve as the chief assistants under team president Dave Dombrowski. The club will not hire a new general manager.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox might not hire a new general manager.
Former GM Mike Hazen left to become the Diamondbacks’ new general manager. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was and still is the top decision-maker, though, and Abraham says the club may fill Hazen’s administrative duties “in another fashion via internal promotions or external additions to the staff.” Peter Gammons reported previously that the Red Sox have offered vice president of amateur and international scouting Amiel Sawdaye their GM job, but it looks like Sawdaye will follow Hazen to Arizona to be their assistant GM.

The Red Sox have exercised manager John Farrell’s 2018 option.
Farrell was under fire a bit when the Red Sox got off to a slow start last season, but they wound up just two wins off the AL lead with 93 victories. They’re 339-309 in four years under Farrell, which includes a World Series title back in 2013.

Red Sox manager John Farrell has been suspended one game for an argument with umpire Bill Miller on Saturday.
He was also fined an undisclosed amount. The heated argument stemmed from a balk call which resulted in a run for the Angels. Farrell will serve the suspension on Tuesday, so he’ll be back in the dugout on Wednesday.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports hears that the Red Sox are unlikely to face harsh penalties for stealing catcher signs using an Apple Watch.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman filed a complaint to the MLB commissioner’s office two weeks ago that included video footage of a member of the Red Sox training staff looking at his Apple Watch in the dugout and then relaying messages to players on the field. Rob Manfred has acknowledged that there is an investigation taking place, but Passan writes that “the most likely upshot is a fine for the organization, with possible suspensions for those involved in the actual scheme, according to sources.” Sign-stealing has been a part of baseball for over a century and Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski laughed off the story on Tuesday. This probably winds up as nothing more than a minor embarrassment for Boston.

According to Michael Schmidt of the New York Times, the Red Sox have been caught stealing catcher signs from the Yankees and other opponents using an Apple Watch.
Schmidt says the inquiry from Major League Baseball investigators began two weeks ago when Yankees general manager Brian Cashman filed a complaint that included video footage of a member of the Red Sox training staff looking at his Apple Watch in the dugout and then relaying messages to players on the field. It is unclear at this time what kind of penalties the Red Sox might be facing. Schmidt notes that the Red Sox have filed a counter-complaint against the Yankees claiming that the team uses a camera from the YES Network to steal signs during games. This is a developing story, with much more to come.
