Mark Grudzielanek has given the Cubs what they need in a leadoff hitter so far, posting an .875 on-base percentage.
Grudzy’s career-best OBP was .376 in 1999, and his next best was .340 in 1996, so he’s not a good bet to be the long-term answer to Chicago’s leadoff problem.

The Cardinals are prevented from offering Mark Grudzielanek arbitration after the season under the terms of the contract he agreed to yesterday.
Not requiring draft pick compensation could make him a more attractive free agent. Grudzielanek received a $1 million base with incremental incentives that provide him $500,000 if he makes at least 550 plate appearances. The incentives begin at 250 plate appearances.

Mark Grudzielanek is 4-for-23 during the NLCS, but manager Dusty Baker has decided against benching him.
Baker considered making a switch prior to Game 5, but he opted not to. “Without Grudzielanek, we wouldn’t be close to where we are,” Baker said Monday. “There is no way I can take him out. With this day off, that should help him.”

Rather than attempting to sign Luis Castillo, the Cubs appear willing to settle for Mark Grudzielanek or Fernando Vina at second base.
Grudzielanek, who is recovering from shoulder surgery but is expected to be ready for spring training, likely will be offered a one-year deal to remain with the club. Vina could get a similar offer, although only one of the two will be signed.

Mark Grudzielanek remains limited by a sprained ankle and could open the season on the disabled list.
The Cubs remain uncertain when Grudzielanek will play again. ''That’s between his ankle, the trainers and the Lord,’' manager Dusty Baker said.
  • CLE 2nd Baseman
Mark Grudzielanek was given a second straight day off Monday with soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder.
Grudzy could return today. He said the soreness is bothering him more in the field than at the plate.

The Cubs say there is no tear in Mark Grudzielanek’s Achilles’ tendon, but he will be examined by team doctor Stephen Gryzlo today in Chicago.
Grudzy is day-to-day after missing two games with the nagging injury. Some in Chicago who are unenamored with Alex Gonzalez have suggested that Grudzielanek move to shortstop, where he hasn’t played since 2000, while Todd Walker takes over second base. Manager Dusty Baker, the only one whose opinion counts, is not in favor.

Mark Grudzielanek is expected back in the lineup in four to five days.
Grudzielanek sprained his right ankle nine days ago.
  • CLE 2nd Baseman
Mark Grudzielanek suffered a setback in his recovery from a partially-torn Achilles’ tendon.
Grudzy did some running last week in Phoenix and said the heel felt fine, but he experienced swelling after running in colder weather over the weekend in St. Louis. He had been looking at a rehab assignment later this week, but that’s on hold now. ''It’s really hard to say,’' he said of a possible return. ''It could be a week. It could be two weeks. It could even be three weeks.’' Todd Walker owners get a reprieve.

Mark Grudzielanek is no longer wearing a walking boot for his partially-torn Achilles tendon and is taking batting practice.
It looks like he’ll be ready to return shortly after he’s eligibile, April 25th. Todd Walker’s excellent hitting will make it easier for the Cubs to take their time.
