2B Mark Kiger became the first player ever to make his major-league debut in a postseason game.
Kiger entered Game 3 in the bottom of the eighth inning after Bobby Kielty had pinch hit for 2B D’Angelo Jimenez. “To get a chance to go out there is awfully special,” said Kiger, who got a chance after Mark Ellis fractured his index finger. “Now or anytime, it’s a good thing to happen.”

Athletics purchased the contract of infielder Mark Kiger.
He gets the nod as Oakland’s 25th man over Keith Ginter. Kiger will replace the injured Mark Ellis and only see action as an emergency backup, but the consensus seemed to be that he was the best defender available.

Minor league infielder Mark Kiger has been trying out for the A’s as the club seeks a replacement for injured Mark Ellis on the ALCS roster.
Kiger, a shortstop who split the year between Double-A and Triple-A, reported to the A’s complex in Phoenix last week to spent time with A’s infielder coach Ron Washington on infield drills. Kiger, who has good plate discipline like most A’s youngsters, is competing with Keith Ginter to replace Ellis, out with a broken finger.
