Cubs signed RHP Matt Harrington to a minor league contract.
Harrington, the seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft, is signing with a major league team for the first time. The 24-year-old worked as a reliever for the independent Fort Worth Cats this season, going 6-1 with a 2.90 ERA and a 56/23 K/BB ratio in 50 innings. Although he’s throwing better that he has in years, his velocity still isn’t what it once was and he’s a long shot to ever make it to the majors.
