Marlins reassigned LHP Justin King, RHP Josh Ekness, and OFs Mathew Etzel, Brendan Jones, and Andrew Pintar to minor league camp.
None of the players are on the 40-man roster or rank inside Miami’s Top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Pintar did have a solid 2025 season, posting a .269/.338/.384 slash line with 23 steals in 84 Triple-A games, and Etzel, who came over from the Rays for Nick Fortes, hit .275/.367/.363 in 31 games at Triple-A last season as well.
  • MIA Center Fielder
Marlins acquired OF prospect Matthew Etzel from the Rays for C Nick Fortes.
Etzel, who is the Rays’ 28th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is currently hitting .230/.360/.347 with five home runs and 17 steals in 56 games for Double-A Montgomery. His calling cards are his speed and plate discipline since he stole 45 bases in 119 games last season and currently sports a 17.2 percent walk rate this year. Perhaps the Marlins are able to turn that into something useful at the big league level.

Rays optioned RHP Yoniel Curet and LHPs Joe Rock and Ian Seymour to Triple-A Durham; reassigned INF Brayden Taylor, OF Matthew Etzel and RHP Paul Gervase to minor league camp.
As is often the case with large batches of cuts this early in camp, there were no real surprises among the group. Curet, 22, was terrific between High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery in 2024, registering a 2.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 159/60 K/BB ratio over 119 innings in his 26 starts. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him start a couple of games for the Rays before the 2025 season concludes.
  • TB Outfield
Rays acquired OF Matthew Etzel, RHP Jackson Baumiester and INF/OF Mac Horvath from the Rays for RHP Zach Eflin.
Etzel, 22, was a 10th round selection from the 2023 draft class. He was enjoying a very strong season between High-A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie — slashing .289/.363/.445 with six long balls, 47 RBI, 41 stolen bases (in 52 attempts) and a 65/36 K/BB ratio over 344 plate appearances. Of the three prospects acquired in the deal, he’s probably the closest to being big-league ready.
