Marlins acquired 1B Nathan Martorella from the Padres in a five-player trade.
Martorella was widely viewed as one of the better hitting prospects in the San Diego system, and he forged an .820 OPS with two homers in his time with Double-A San Antonio prior to the trade. He’ll likely report to Double-A with the Marlins, with a decent chance of making his MLB debut in 2024.
  • SD Outfield
Craig Mish of Sportsgrid reports that the Marlins will receive Dillon Head, Woo Suk-Go and Nathan Martorella from the Padres in return for Luis Arraez.
Head is the prize for the Marlins in the trade. The 19-year-old outfielder was the Padres’ first-round selection (25th overall) from the 2023 draft. He’s at least a couple of years away from helping out at the big league level but projects as an impact five-category contributor. Suk-Go should immediately step in and help in the big league bullpen. It’s unusual to see a team wave the white flag on the season in the first week of May, but nothing that the Marlins do should be that surprising anymore.
  • SD Catcher
Padres re-assigned C Ethan Salas, RHPs Nick Hernandez, Jairo Iriarte and Adam Mazur, LHPs Daniel Camarena, Austin Krob and Robby Snelling and INFs Marcos Castañon and Nathan Martorella to minor league camp
There are no major surprises among the first large batch of cuts for the Padres, as anticipated. With these moves they are now down to 50 players remaining in big league camp. Salas, the 17-year-old phenom, went 2-for-7 with a double and an RBI in his limited Cactus League action this spring. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see him in the big leagues during the 2024 season, but his time will be coming soon.
