Andrew McCutchen took himself out of Friday night’s game against the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth due to left knee discomfort, reports Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. McCutchen had led off the top half of the inning with a fly ball to right field and said he “felt a little something” while running according to manager Clint Hurdle.
McCutchen missed some time during spring training due to lower body soreness. Hurdle scoffed when asked if the injuries were related. The severity of the injury is not known yet, but the Pirates are likely to rest their star center fielder for Saturday night’s game.
McCutchen went 0-for-4 in the series opener against the Brewers and is batting just .125 to start the season.
