Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that the A’s are “square in the mix” and “a legitimate suitor” to sign free agent reliever Ryan Madson, adding that the 35-year-old is looking for a multi-year deal.
Injuries derailed Madson’s career, but after not pitching in the majors at all from 2012-2014 he had a fantastic bounceback year with the Royals by logging 63 innings with a 2.13 ERA and 58/14 K/BB ratio.
Madson’s struggled in the playoffs and given his age and injury history a multi-year commitment is risky, but the payoff could be a front-line setup man or closer.
