Blue Jays nearly pulled off a trade for Indians starter Carlos Carrasco

Carlos Carrasco

Last week there were reports of the Blue Jays talking to the Indians about right-hander Carlos Carrasco and Shi Davidi of Toronto Sportsnet reports that the two sides were close to completing a trade before it “fell apart near the finish line.”

Details are sparse, but the Indians presumably would have needed a ton in return for Carrasco considering he’s a 28-year-old starter with a 3.35 ERA and 273 strikeouts in 252 innings since the beginning of last season and is under team control at reasonable salaries through 2020.

Davidi says Carrasco “is no longer on the table” and the Blue Jays are expected to look elsewhere for pitching help. But if the Indians are still open to dealing Carrasco expect quite a few teams to come calling with strong offers. He’s young, far away from free agency, and has top-of-the-rotation potential with high strikeout rates and good control.
