Brewers acquire shortstop Jonathan Villar from Astros

Looking to pick up some infield depth, the Brewers have acquired shortstop Jonathan Villar from the Astros in exchange for minor leaguer Cy Sneed.

Milwaukee’s new general manager David Stearns was previously the assistant GM in Houston, so his targeting the 24-year-old Villar makes sense. Starting shortstop Jean Segura could be on the trading block and shortstop prospect Orlando Arcia isn’t quite ready for the big leagues yet.

Villar hit well in a part-time role this year after struggling in 2013 and 2014, batting .284 with two homers and a .752 OPS in 53 games. He’s previously never hit much even in the minors, but has 40-steal speed and a good glove.

Sneed was the Brewers’ third-round draft pick in 2014 and spent this year pitching at Single-A, throwing 139 innings with a 2.58 ERA and 122/28 K/BB ratio. While not a top prospect, he has some MLB potential down the road.
