Right-hander Jean Machi, who briefly served as the Red Sox’s closer this past season, has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Cubs.
Prior to the Red Sox claiming him off waivers Machi spent 2012-2015 with the Giants, logging 161 innings with a 3.24 ERA in a middle relief role.
At age 34 he lacks upside, but when healthy Machi has generally been a solid middle reliever with a 3.47 ERA in 189 career appearances. He’ll compete for a bullpen spot during spring training.
