David Wright missed the bulk of his 2015 season with spinal stenosis and made it through a month of games in 2016 before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck. In 2017, a bout of shoulder impingement, rotator cuff surgery and a laminotomy procedure on his lower back kept him off the big league field for all 162 games and limited him to three appearances in A-ball.
He was back in spring training with the hope of playing again. He wasn’t doing much, but the hope was there, pending further medical evaluations. Now those evaluations are in and, while not necessarily surprising, are not good:

Again, he wasn’t engaging in any baseball activity as it was, but it still has to be disappointing for him.
The Mets have Wright under contract for three more years, paying him $20 million this season, $15 million in 2019, and $12 million in 2020. Insurance is picking up the bulk of that.
