Diamondbacks call up $68.5 million project Yasmany Tomas

As announced Wednesday evening on the Diamondbacks’ official Twitter account ...

#Dbacks recall outfielder Yasmany Tomás from the Triple-A Reno @Aces and option pitcher A.J. Schugel.

— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) April 15, 2015

Tomas was optioned to the minors at the end of spring training because the D’Backs didn’t have enough room for him to get regular at-bats. And it’s hard to figure how that situation has changed over the past 10 days.

Tomas was playing exclusively in right field at Reno, so the third base experiment is presumably over.

The 24-year-old Cuban signed a six-year, $68.5 million free agent contract with Arizona last November, but he showed up to Diamondbacks camp in poor physical shape and batted just .257 with a .721 OPS over 70 at-bats in the Cactus League. Tomas was off to an underwhelming 4-for-21 (.190) start with the Reno Aces.
