Don Orsillo could become the Padres next announcer

Don Orsillo

Chad Finn of the Boston Globe reports that Red Sox announcer Don Orsillo -- who is being let go by the club after the season for reasons that the club still doesn’t really want to talk about -- is being pursued by the San Diego Padres.

As Finn notes, Dick Enberg recently said 2016 will be his last season, so Orsillo could transition in on a limited basis next season and take over full time in 2017. Finn also notes that the Padres’ TV deal with with Fox, which could also allow Orsillo to split time with the Fox national broadcasts if anyone so desired.

This all reminds me of when Peter Angelos chased off Jon Miller from Orioles broadcasts and Miller ended up in San Francisco. A great announcer, appreciated by absolutely everyone except for his employer, “forced” to relocate to one of the best cities on the planet. If it happens for Orsillo, I couldn’t be happier.
