It turns out Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion was even more banged up than everyone thought during the playoffs.

Encarnacion played through a finger injury down the stretch and was forced out of Game 1 of the ALCS with pain before returning to finish the series. And today Encarnacion underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia.

He’s expected to be fully healthy in time for spring training and despite battling an assortment of injuries this season Encarnacion played 146 games and posted the second-best OPS of his career while hitting .277 with 39 homers. Those excellent overall numbers include huge production in August and September, plus a solid postseason.
