First baseman Justin Morneau, currently a free agent, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he underwent surgery on his left elbow on December 22, per Lavelle E. Neal III. As a result, he will be unable to swing a bat until June.
Morneau played with the Rockies last season and the club diagnosed him with tendinitis. However, because he wasn’t getting better, Morneau independently had an MRI during the offseason which led to a different diagnosis and presented the need for surgery. Morneau will rehab from the surgery on his own.
Teams had contacted Morneau throughout the offseason but he was up front about his health issues.
Morneau, 34, has battled injuries throughout the second half of his 13-year career, including suffering two concussions. He played in 49 games last season, hitting .310/.363/.458 with three home runs and 15 RBI over 182 plate appearances.
