Jason Giambi, Rockies agree to exercise 2012 mutual option

From beat writer Troy Renck of the Denver Post comes word that the Rockies and Jason Giambi have agreed to exercise the backup first baseman’s $1 million mutual option for 2012.

Giambi might have been able to fetch a slightly more fruitful salary on the open market after slugging 13 home runs and tallying 32 RBI in just 131 at-bats this season, but he’s comfortable out in Colorado and seems to have embraced his part-time role behind starting first baseman Todd Helton.

Giambi has earned over $131 million in his 17-year major league career. We’re guessing that money alone no longer drives his decisions.
