Brandon Maurer winning a spot in the Mariners’ rotation out of spring training was a surprise, but after going 2-7 with a 6.93 ERA in 10 starts the 23-year-old rookie is headed back to the minors.

Maurer made the jump from Double-A to the majors after throwing 138 innings with a 3.20 ERA and 117/48 K/BB ratio last season, so now he’ll pitch at Triple-A for the first time.

Add another data point to the “spring training doesn’t mean much of anything” theory, but Maurer still has a bright future and figures to be back in Seattle at some point in the second half.
