Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Mariners have signed outfielder Endy Chavez to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. He adds that they’re close to signing outfielder Franklin Gutierrez as well, likely to a minor league deal with a spring training invitation.

Chavez, 37 in February, batted .276/.317/.371 in 252 plate appearances for the Mariners last season. He’ll add versatility with his ability to play all three outfield positions.

Gutierrez, 32 in February, sat out the 2014 season with gastrointestinal issues. In 2013, he hit .248/.273/.503 with 10 home runs and 24 RBI in 151 plate appearances. Gutierrez, too, can play all three outfield positions.
