Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that pitcher Mat Latos has signed with the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Canadian-American Association.

Latos made three underwhelming starts for the Blue Jays before being released in May last year. He yielded 11 runs on 19 hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts in 15 innings. Latos had remained unsigned ever since. It’s been a rough few years for him, as he was last healthy and effective in the majors in 2013 with the Reds.

Latos is only 30, but the road back to the majors will be a long one. Playing for the Jackals will be the first step.
