Yesterday, Mets outfielder Michael Conforto left spring training in Florida to return to New York. He tweaked his side making a catch in the outfield over the weekend. Following an evaluation by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, Conforto has been diagnosed with a strained right oblique, The Athletic’s Tim Britton reports.
Conforto will be reassessed in a week, but it would be surprising if he was ready for the start of the regular season. Even the more mild oblique strains tend to knock players out of action for a few weeks.
Last season, Conforto hit a productive .257/.363/.494 with 33 home runs, 92 RBI, 90 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 648 plate appearances. The injury will likely open the door for Jake Marisnick and Dominic Smith to claim more playing time.
