Pat Burrell’s deal: $1 million plus incentives

Philadelphia Phillies v San Francisco Giants, Game 4

Ken Rosenthal reports that Pat Burrell will make a $1 million base salary with some added incentives.

I think this renders the deal sufficiently free of risk in the event that playoffs Pat Burrell shows up for the 2011 season instead of post-trade-from-the-Rays Burrell. At $1 million, the Giants can pretty much cut bait on the guy and not regret it too terribly. Or, even if he’s producing decently enough, they won’t mind benching him and moving Aubrey Huff to left in the event that Brandon Belt forces his way into the lineup.

This also, by the way, causes fans of teams in need of a corner outfielder to breathe a sigh of relief. Personally I could see the Braves giving him a couple three million, and I’m sure other teams would have considered this. Which would have been a bad risk in my view.
