The Red Sox announced Thursday afternoon that they promoted Mike Hazen to be their new general manager. Hazen takes over for Ben Cherington, who resigned after the team hired former Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski as their president of baseball operations last month.
Hazen, a Massachusetts native, has been with the Red Sox organization for a decade in a number of different roles. He was named senior vice president/assistant general manager this January. The Angels recently interviewed him for their general manager opening.
According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald, Dombrowski said this afternoon that he had a list of about 30 candidates for the open position. However, he only interviewed Hazen and Astros director of player development Quinton McCracken. He ultimately decided to stay in-house.
While Hazen has the title of GM and will be the pointman as the Red Sox attempt to get back on the winning track, he acknowledged this afternoon that Dombrowski “is going to be making the decisions in the end.”
