The Brewers and Diamondbacks got into a plunking war earlier this week. Or at least the Diamondbacks did. The Brewers don’t typically play that game. As Adam McCalvy reports, the Brewers are usually last or near last in hitting opposing batters with pitches even when they are being hit a lot.
This is no coincidence. Ron Roenicke says that it’s part of his philosophy:“We try to pitch the way we should pitch. We don’t throw at people. There’s a time you have to pitch inside to get people out. Good hitters you have to pitch inside. So that’s what happens.
“I’ve seen teams get hurt by it, yes. But I don’t think it’s part of the game. Just pitch. Get people out.”
Good for Roenicke. Would that more managers felt the way he does about it.
