Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have placed Trevor Plouffe on outright waivers. He’ll clear waivers in a few days and will become a free agent.
Plouffe, 30, has a line of .247/.308/.420 over seven big league seasons. While a couple of seasons of 20+ homers established him as a regular in the eyes of the previous Twins front office and made him well-liked by a certain segment of Twins fans, the new regime no doubt sees that his production does not merit the $8 million+ or so he was slated to make in 2018.
With Plouffe gone, third base will be open for Miguel Sano to be the everyday starter at the hot corner in Minnesota.
