Troy Tulowitzki says Rockies spring training was “like a country club”

Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki still harbors resentment over his sudden departure from the Rockies. As Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reports, Tulowitzki says he will “never talk to” certain unnamed Rockies executives. He says, as a Rockie, “You get lied to, straight to your face.”

In October, the National Post’s John Lott reported on Tulowitzki’s displeasure with how his trade went down. Tulowitzki said, “It’s tough for me now to trust anybody in this game after what happened.” Per Lott, Tulowitzki was traded last July with no warning, after being told by the Rockies that he wouldn’t be moved.

At Blue Jays camp in Dunedin, Florida, Tulowitzki criticized his former team again, saying, “I like this place a lot better than Arizona. That place was like a country club. Guys got comfortable because it was so nice.” The Rockies, of course, host spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Tulowitzki’s comment didn’t sit well with Rockies manager Walt Weiss and third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Weiss, via ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick:

“I think that’s the furthest thing from the truth,” Weiss told reporters. “We have a nice place here and we’re proud of it, but our guys are mentally tough and they compete. I have no issue with our guys being soft or country-clubbish. Our guys are the opposite of that.”

And Arenado, via Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post:

“I’ve told you that Tulo is my boy, and he still is my friend,” Arenado said. “But obviously, Tulo has some anger still. I don’t know if it’s the right way to be saying it in the media, but that’s his business and that’s how he’s handling it.

“But I don’t think it’s a country club here. I think it’s just a matter of guys putting their work in. I don’t agree with the ‘country club’ statement.”

As luck would have it, the Blue Jays travel to Colorado for a three-game regular season series between June 27-29. That will be interesting, to say the least.
