Pirates optioned C Robinzon Diaz and OF/1B Steve Pearce to Triple-A Indianapolis; reassigned INF Anderson Machado to minor league camp.
Diaz should be very frustrated. The Pirates said it was a competition, but he was outstanding this spring (.423/.464/.769) and still lost out to Jason Jaramillo, who is hitting .143/.226/.143. Jaramillo is the superior defender, but Diaz is hardly bad behind the plate. The Pirates shouldn’t have lied about giving him a chance to win the job.
